Senate approves defence bill, defies White House veto threat
The NDAA includes provisions that strengthen the information sharing and coordination between the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security in order to support increase situational awareness of the border and authorizes $1.3 billion in funding for the counter ISIL efforts overseas.
On Tuesday, the Senate approved a military spending bill that requires women to be registered for mandatory military service when they turn 18. Failure to sign up within 30 days of one’s 18th birthday could lead to penalties such as losing federal aid for higher education, including Pell Grants. No offense to the veteran, but there are a number of reasons why women should not be obligated to register for the draft and they are quite logical and simple reasons.
“Forcing women to register for the draft would be a sea change not only for our Armed Services but culturally as well”, Lee said in a statement introducing the amendment last month.
Some, however, clearly did not agree. Women can do anything they put their minds to. but the idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat to my mind makes little to no sense.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), on the other hand, railed against the provision and ultimately voted against the underlying military spending bill.
For this defense bill to become law, the Senate must go to conference with the House of Representatives and get the President’s signature.
Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, the House Armed Services Committee chairman, said he has personally heard from troops in combat who have received intimidating calls from junior White House staffers.
He voted in favor of the bill, despite “some real policy reservations because it’s good for CT working families”.
The Senate and House will now negotiate on a final bill.
The White House has threatened to veto the defense bill due to other provisions that the administration’s Office of Management and Budget called “attempts to micromanage” the Department of Defense.
A Bill seeking special status for India has failed to pass the US Senate. He gave no indication how many senators had objected to the provision.
“It’s hard to imagine any of my colleagues standing up to say that men and women willing to make the ultimate sacrifices for their country – for all of us – should be denied a shot at their dream of a family”, Murray said in a speech on the Senate floor.
However, the House version of the amendment, which was passed by voice vote, which also calls for strengthening of India-US Defense ties, does not specifically mentions bringing the defence trade to that of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally.

Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said a measure she successfully championed in 2014 could resolve some of the concerns by limiting a commander’s ability to throw out verdicts in sexual abuse cases. “However, during your presidency, the military sexual assault crisis has continued, and minimal reforms have not worked”.
The question of including women in the draft has been a contentious one since United States Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced in December the historic decision to open all combat positions to women.
