Senate Democrats Plan All-Night Talkathon over Betsy DeVos’ Nomination
The Senate will decide on February 7 whether or not to confirm DeVos, who now has the support of 50 Republicans and the opposition of 50 others, including all Democrats and two Republican senators, notes the Washington Post.
Durbin called DeVos “unqualified” and said the US needs an education chief who will stand up for students, educators and schools, not corporate and for-profit interests. But if just a single Republican Senator can be convinced to vote against DeVos in the next 24 hours, her nomination will fail.

“But we’re not sure he’s actually heard us yet”, Burnett said. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said Democrats need to “get over the fact that the election didn’t turn out the way they hoped and get back to work”. Then again, so have a lot of other Republicans in Washington, as DeVos admitted in her one confirmation hearing that “it’s possible” that she and her husband (Dick DeVos Jr.) have given $200 million to candidates over the years.
Burnett says the ongoing fight over public school funding in Kansas will likely carry over to the national level with DeVos calling the shots. We understand. After all, this is the lady who said guns are necessary in school because of grizzlies. “Nine hundred of which who are educators”.
My mother was a public school teacher. Having you entrusted to oversee our country’s largely successful public and private school system would be un “bear” able and would hardly make America’s schools “grrrrrreat” again. “Her views are extreme”, Schumer said of DeVos, who has lobbied extensively for charter schools and voucher programs.
A split 50-50 Senate vote on DeVos is expected Tuesday. “Here in Kansas, we have a really hard time when the numbers don’t match”.
The left’s hatred of school choice is very revealing.
Betsy DeVos, with her minimal knowledge and expertise, can become a threat to the education and futures of students.
“He has a real political opportunity here to listen to his constituents over his billionaire donors”.
Two Republican senators have also said they will oppose Devos’ nomination, which could result in a 50-50 Senate vote that would require a tie-breaker vote from Vice President Mike Pence.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Murray encouraged activists who have already called or emailed their senator to keep the pressure up until the vote itself, which is scheduled for noon Tuesday.
