Senate Panel Approves Nikki Haley’s Nomination for UN Ambassador
President Donald Trump today met Nikki Haley in the White House soon after she was sworn in as America’s next Ambassador to the United Nations, scripting history by becoming the first Indian-American to serve on a Cabinet rank position in any U.S. presidential administration. Chris Coons, Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich the only members of the upper chamber to disapprove. Bernie Sanders of Vermont – voting against her. McMaster was an early Trump endorser, backing him before the state’s GOP primary in February.
Walker was deputy chief of staff for Haley during her first year in office, working as her legislative liaison.
Haley said that she would “absolutely” support the move, which Trump’s elected Israel envoy, David Friedman, is expected to lead.
She was confirmed before former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson, Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, who did not succeed in quelling the committee’s concerns over the new administration’s stance on Russian Federation following revelations that country meddled in USA elections.
“Russia is trying to show their muscle right now”.
She also acknowledged in her hearing testimony that “Crimea is not Russian” and spoke “very strongly” about defending Ukrainian sovereignty, Cardin said, referring to the Kremlin’s annexation of the region in Ukraine.
Once considered a potential vice president pick, Trump’s tapping of Haley, 44, further raises the profile of a rising star in a party whose leaders are increasingly attempting to attract more minorities and women. She rejected the idea of a Muslim registry or ban, which Mr Trump has never fully disavowed. I believe she has the instincts that will help her achieve reform.
And Haley said during her hearing she would speak up to Trump in favor of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance and the United Nations, both of which Trump has criticized and toyed with the idea of abandoning. His choice, former Exxon Mobil Chief Executive Rex Tillerson, faced unanimous opposition from the 10 Foreign Relations Committee Democrats after a confirmation hearing at which they said he seemed poorly prepared.
“I do anticipate that he will listen to all of us and see it the way we see it.”
The South Carolina governor won strong support for the United Nations post, with the Senate voting 96-4 in favor of Haley’s nomination. Although she understands the viewpoint that Israeli settlements could hinder peace, she criticized the Obama administration’s action- or inaction.
