Senate Republicans on the spot over Trump comments on Khan
Now that Trump has done the unthinkable by insulting a fallen war hero and his family (plus an entire religion), Americans seem to be looking to third-party candidates like Libertarian Gary Johnson.
Trump has drawn fire from Republicans and others after criticizing Khan’s parents Khizr and Ghazala Khan, who spoke against him at the Democrat National Convention last week. At one point he noted that Ghazala Khan stood silently during the convention speech, and implied she wasn’t allowed to speak due to their Muslim faith.
The back and forth between Trump and the grieving Gold Star family has continued into this week, leading many Republicans to rebuke Trump.
It’s not just Senator Thune that is speaking publicly about Donald Trump’s comments. Let us know what you think by taking our poll, commenting on the story and joining the conversation on Facebook!
In an interview with Al Jazeera’s Mehdi Hasan, the host of UpFront, Khizr Khan condemned the Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, and Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, for failing to withdraw their endorsement of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
“I think it just means he’s concerned I’m going to win”, he said. Khan’s father, a Muslim, criticized Trump for calling for a ban on Muslims and accused him of not knowing the Constitution. She probably – maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. “He keeps running his mouth about the most ridiculous things and attacking a family who has sacrificed so much for the freedoms we all enjoy”. Ms. Khan later explained that she is still too emotionally despondent over the loss of her son 12 years ago to be able to speak about it in public.
Trump then fired back, pointing out that Mrs. Khan said nothing and that might have been because of how some Muslims see women.
The Michigan Democratic Party wants to be sure the Republican nominee has actually read the U.S. Constitution and is now planning to send copies to him.
Senator Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., whose husband is a veteran of the Iraq war, also condemned Trump’s remarks, according to The New York Times, saying that she was left “appalled” by them.
Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was a USA senator from NY at the time and voted in favor of invading Iraq to topple President Saddam Hussein.
In one of several tweets he has fired off in recent days over the controversy, Trump wrote Sunday: “I was viciously attacked by Mr. Khan at the Democratic Convention”. He added that we must “do everything that we can for those families and honor them and be humbled by them”.
