Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) Endorses Donald Trump for President
In 2015, Donald Trump described the $1 million loan from his father as “small”.
Donald Trump invited Ted Cruz to speak at the Republican National Convention in July, where Mr. Trump was officially named and accepted the GOP nomination for president of the United States.
Eric Trump on Friday defended his father’s self-made real estate mogul narrative, saying the Republican presidential nominee was the epitome of the American dream for having “gone from just about nothing” to become a successful real estate mogul in NY. “To those listening, please, don’t stay home in November”, he said in a speech at the convention. “And if you don’t want to see a Hillary Clinton presidency, I encourage you to vote for him”.
The Texas senator’s announcement may not use the word “endorse”, only a declaration that he plans to vote for the Republican nominee. The statement clearly indicates that Cruz wants his supporters to look at this as a vote against Hillary Clinton rather than a vote for Donald Trump.
The 32-year-old Eric Trump on Friday also said that he thought millennials did not relate to policy well because “they haven’t lived their lives long enough to understand … the broad stroke of issues”. First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee.
Just as Cruz’s refusal to endorse Trump at the RNC fueled Democrats’ efforts to paint Trump as divisive even within his own party, Cruz’s endorsement will help undermine that narrative – suggesting to conservatives unsure about Trump that perhaps the brash billionaire has changed, and can be trusted to bring conservative change to Washington. Later that day, Trump came out in support of Cruz’s top priority in Congress: stopping what Cruz calls the Obama administration’s Internet “giveaway”.
My conscience tells me I must do whatever I can to stop that.
Only Donald Trump expressed at the time that he could not yet make that commitment.
Now, with the race tightening ahead of the first presidential debate, Cruz was feeling the pressure. This comes two months after Cruz declined to offer his endorsement at the 2016 Republican National Convention, later saying he would not support someone who attacked his wife.
Atlanta-based talk show host Erick Erickson said a Cruz endorsement at this point “plays to the caricature that he is self-interested, not really principled”. Who cast aside anger for love. In return, Cruz tweeted out his thanks to Trump.
