The government is readying a huge development package for Jammu and Kashmir that may be to the tune of Rs 50,000 crore covering areas like tourism, power, health, water resources and infrastructure development.
Modi, who will be accompanied by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, will be attending an event to honour Pt Dogra, the Congress leader who was the state’s finance minister for over two decades and a Member of Parliament from Udhampur-Doda and Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha constituencies.
The special plane carrying the prime minister landed at the technical area of Jammu airport around 11 a.m.
The function will be held at the Jammu University General Zorawar Singh auditorium.
He attended the centenary celebrations of former state finance minister late Girdhari Lal Dogra.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Congress MPs Karan Singh and Ghulam Nabi Azad also attended the function. Major traffic restrictions have also been imposed across Jammu city.
Modi is scheduled to fly back to New Delhi in the afternoon.
The function venue was taken over by the Special Protection Group looking after the security of the Prime Minister.
SSP (in charge) Jammu Rajiv Panday said that elaborate security arrangements have been kept in place ahead of the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit.
He said that the area around the venues of Prime Minister’s visit have been properly sensitised and adequate deployment has been made near the venue.
After threadbare discussion on various security related issues pertaining to the high profile visit and strengthening of infiltration grid on IB and LoC, all the officers of Army, PMF, Intelligence agencies and Police have been directed to maintain highest level of alertness and co-ordination among themselves and also to share the intelligence related information directly bearing to the VVIP visit in real time basis.
He said that frisking of the people going towards the venue would be done and nobody would be allowed without a valid identity card.
