Seoul Fires Warning Shots At ‘North Korea Drone’

South Korea resumed broadcasting messages critical of Kim from speakers lined up along the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, and it sharply curtailed access to a jointly run industrial park on the northern side of the border.

While the drone did not get far, the sound of machine gun fire was a signal that the current inter-Korean standoff might be shifting in a different direction.

North Korea carried out its fourth nuclear test on January 6, claiming that it detonated a hydrogen bomb – which is enormously more powerful than the three atomic devices it previously tested.

It did not say whether the South Koreans hit the object.

When Park viewed China’s largest-ever military parade in Beijing in September 2015 from a prominent spot near President Xi Jinping, some observers said the South had replaced the North as China’s favorite Korea.

North Korea analyst Victor Cha with the Washington D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies said dealing with the growing nuclear threat from North Korea remains an issue of secondary interest.

However, South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo points out that Seoul has not been able to get in touch directly with Xi Jinping.

Her stance was backed hours later by a meeting in Seoul of the US, Japanese and South Korean special envoys on North Korea.

I believe China knows very well that fifth and sixth nuclear tests by the North in the future can not be stopped and the true peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula can not be guaranteed unless its strong will is translated into actual, necessary actions.

The US House of Representatives has voted nearly unanimously to broaden measures targeting North Korea over its nuclear programme.

Hwang is scheduled to fly to Beijing on Thursday to meet with his Chinese counterpart Wu Dawei and to Moscow on Tuesday for talks with his Russian counterpart Igor Morgulov. Kim executed dozens of officials on charges ranging from graft to watching South Korean soap operas, the intelligence agency said in May.

South Korea, the United States and others are pushing hard to impose fresh sanctions and other punitive measures on the North for what Pyongyang said was a hydrogen bomb test.

In 2013, state media said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had watched a drone attack drill on a simulated South Korean target.

“Amongst people in cities that have more access to foreign information and are the most switched on, there is likely more ambivalence or even cynicism over the use of precious resources for things that bring no tangible benefit to the people and cause worsening relations with the outside world”, said Park.

“We strongly urge the DPRK (North Korea) side to remain committed to its denuclearization commitment, and stop taking any actions that would make the situation worse”, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said.

Earlier Wednesday, Vice Foreign Minister Lim Sung-nam and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken spoke by phone and agreed that the North’s test defies past U.N. Security Council resolutions, according to the Foreign Ministry.
