Although they will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who took the Qualifying Test.
Washington Township High School senior Jennifer Wenzel has been named a semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP).
Harrisburg Academy also featured two National Merit Scholarship Program semifinalists this year – Wesley Sheker ’16 and Sarah Trindell ’16. Ninety percent of all semifinalists nationwide advance to the finalist level based on fulfilling several more requirements. “There is no doubt in my mind that Nathan will earn the coveted National Merit Finalist award and be selected for a highly sought after scholarship”. Among them was Broomfield High senior William Jacob Ogden. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.
To become a National Merit Scholarship finalist, semifinalists must hold an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that are comparable to their earlier performance on the qualifying test. “Being acknowledged as a National Merit Semifinalist is a great honor and testament to Jennifer’s academic ability”. Students will compete for three types of scholarships.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2016 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
