Serena and Venus on court in women’s semifinals at Wimbledon
It’s a repeat of the Melbourne Park final where Kerber stunned Williams in a third set thriller.
Kerber beat Venus Williams 6-4 6-4 in second semi-final after Serena wiped out unseeded Russian Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-0 in just 49 minutes.
Serena beat her older sister in the 2002 and ’03 finals, but Venus won the next one in 2008. She made little to no unforced errors. In Australia, Kerber made volleys hard for Williams, and she’ll have to do that again on Saturday.
“I’ve learned from my ups and downs”. She was fearless. That’s something I learnt.
For the second straight year, Williams has reached three Grand Slam finals, an accomplishment in itself.
“Yeah, I have no hunger anymore”.
Serena said making what will be her ninth Wimbledon final isn’t enough.
“For anyone else in this whole planet, it would be a wonderful accomplishment”, Serena said. But in her first All England Club semi-final for seven years, Venus the oldest woman to make the last four since Martina Navratilova in 1994 was unable to roll back the years one more time.
“I prefer the word ‘one of the greatest athletes of all time, ‘” Serena said, via Sports Illustrated.
“It’s about holding the trophy and winning”.
Hitting 11 aces, no double faults, and 28 winners, Williams demolished the world’s 50-ranked player in 48 minutes, the fastest Wimbledon semifinal since Lindsay Davenport beat Alexandra Stevenson in just 47 minutes in 1999.
Adamant that Graf’s Open-era record of 22 singles majors was never her goal, Williams refuses to discuss a number she has failed to equal – when heavily favoured to – three times.
“I would love to”.
“I think I’ve been training my mind for years and years, and I’ve been preparing for these moments for decades”, Serena said.
“It was pretty tough for her but I think now I can say it was okay to lose because we had some time to rest the shoulder and get ready for Wimbledon”, the towering, affable German told CNN.
Serena Williams had a great counter on social media.
LONDON (AP) – Venus Williams’ deepest Grand Slam run in a half-dozen years ended one victory short of what would have been yet another Wimbledon title match against her sister Serena.
She is happier to be by Venus’s side which is exactly where she was later in the day, in the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles, against Vesnina again, playing with Ekaterina Makarova.
Kerber, who won the Australian Open this year, will face Serena Williams in Saturday’s final. So this is why I was a little bit nervous when I went there because I know that I have to play good tennis against Venus.
“After Australia there were a lot of things for me to handle, but it’s six months ago now and I’ve learned from this experience”, Kerber said.
After sweeping to the final without dropping a set, Kerber is guaranteed to reach a career-high second in the rankings next week.
