Serena demolishes Radwanska to make Open final
The chirping intensified as Williams served in the sixth game of the second set, and she looked up angrily after her off-balance forehand from the baseline conceding her only service break of the match.
Once again, it was all about Serena Williams in an Australian Open semifinal. “Surely. I think in these situations I think people become skeptical when it’s sort of kept in-house”.
But Kerber now has a momentous task ahead against a player in awesome form, after defending champion Williams swept past fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-0, 6-4 in the other semi-final. It is understandable for invincibility is only a myth. Last year Roberta Vinci reminded her of it in the US Open semi-finals, but after four months off to rest her knees Williams has regained both composure and authority.
The Pole admitted she was left in awe after seeing her 13-match win streak emphatically halted by the Williams juggernaut.
Williams came out dominating Radwanska’s serve in the opening game.
Serena Williams didn’t even give Agnieszka Radwanska a chance.
The first set quickly went by in a blur. Williams was returning the ball at over 130.
German seventh seed Kerber progressed with a hard-fought 7-5 6-2 victory over unseeded Johanna Konta at Rod Laver Arena.
A comeback in the middle of the second set notwithstanding, Radwanska was beaten in comprehensive fashion, 6-0 6-4, in 64 minutes.
Radwanska had to hope Williams’ level would drop so she could get into some of the points. It’s really cool. We always get along. As Williams started hitting a few more errors, Radwanska was able to lengthen some of the rallies.
“Going against Aga, you have to be ready or be ready to go home (and) I was able to do everything that I needed to do”, she said.
But it was only a temporary reprieve with Williams holding serve then breaking to march 2-1 clear. But then, she pulled away – so quickly that Radwanska’s run was quickly forgotten.
Williams’ win over fourth-seeded Radwanska provided another yet reminder of her dominance in the women’s game. And, with ease, she served out the match in a hurry with three aces and a powerful victor.
The World No. 1 ripped a crosscourt backhand return victor that just caught the line sending the game to deuce. Konta felt the early pressure as sloppy errors allowed Kerber to snare three break points, but some handsome winners saved each one. Radwanska, in an attempt to do the same, sprayed a forehand long. But the Scotsman moved out to a 4-1 lead in the third set, during which there was a brief break when the roof on Rod Laver Arena was closed due to an approaching thunderstorm.
Then “when you come back to the game you are more excited and it’s less stress”, said Mouratoglou. With several big serves, she quickly found herself at 40-0. In the process, Serena racked up 42 winners while Radwanska landed just four.
“I definitely block it out”, Williams replied to a question about equaling Graf’s mark. “Like I said on the court, she’s a really nice girl”.
