Serena demolishes Radwanska to reach Open final
Serena Williams gave another reminder of her dominance in women’s tennis with a 6-0, 6-4 win Thursday morning in the Australian Open semifinals against Agnieszka Radwanska, who is soon to move to the No. 3 ranking.
The signs are not good for Radwanska, who easily disposed of Spanish 10th seed Carla Suarez 6-1, 6-3 win on Rod Laver Arena. Djokovic held his first service game at love and broke the 17-time Grand Slam champion in the second. Her downfall started in an epic semi-final at the 2005 Australian Open, with the American scraping home in a 2-6, 7-5, 8-6 thriller. In fact, 34-year-old Serena Williams has beaten Maria Sharapova in every one of their past 18 meetings, stretching her unbeaten record over the 28-year-old to an incredible 12 years, thanks to her win at the Australian Open.
In the finals, Williams will face Kerber for the first major singles title of the year.
Is she can frustrate Serena by absorbing the American’s power game – something she’s yet to figure out – and wait for errors to creep into her opponent’s play, there is a definite chance for her.
“She started playing really well in the second set, making a lot of great shots and hitting the ball deep”. “But otherwise I didn’t really think that I was playing bad”. “She makes you go back to the drawing board, not just for me, but for many other players”. By the second set, she decided that she wanted to return to her usual style, to play the way she’d played so far in her run to the quarterfinals.
“I’ve had matches where I’ve played similar tennis”, said Djokovic, the top-ranked player in the world.
After coming within two matches of becoming the first player since Graf in 1988 to achieve the calendar-year grand slam in September, Williams decided not to play again in 2015. Unbelievable serve. Everything, she was going for it. I couldn’t do much. The one thing Kerber does have going for her is the aggressiveness at the net. She makes you work.
“Everyone was nervous that I took four months off but I needed a bit of a break”. But we’ll see. I think if I do play her, it will be a really good match.
Williams said she hasn’t thought about getting to 22 grand slam titles, pointing out that when she thought of 18 and tying legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, it stressed her out. Williams is not bothered and is excited about the upcoming match, as ABC News reported.
Serena will be joined by big sister Venus in the women’s field for the BNP Paribas Open in March, a year after Serena returned to the Indian Wells event in the California desert to end to her 14-year boycott.
Sharapova has won five majors, including the 2008 Australian title, and has been in three other finals at Melbourne Park. The German’s confidence is high after encouragement from compatriot Steffi Graf to believe in herself as she looks to reach a major final for the first time.
“It’s part of the reason why I guess I’m still playing”, Federer said.
“She’s done incredible, ” he said.
