Serena doubles up with Venus for title
Serena Williams’ memory is not as powerful as her first serve these days, although with so many achievements to recall it would be churlish to hold that against the American great.
Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova, sister Venus, Lindsay Davenport, Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina, Vera Zvonareva, Justine Henin, Agnieszka Radwanska, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Lucie Safarova, Garbine Muguruza and now Kerber have all succumbed to Williams’ unrivalled serving excellence, raw power and competitive fire.
Williams’ 7-5 6-3 victory gave her a seventh title at the All England Club and leaves her two short of equalling Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 grand slams.
Williams won her first major title since Wimbledon previous year. “It was getting down to the pressure”. Court’s record is surely next. “That’s always a great feeling”, said Williams, who will receive $2.5 million in prize money.
“I hope that I will reach a few more finals and maybe win a few more Grand Slams”.
“One thing I learned about past year is to enjoy the moment”.
“Next time I’m going to try to serve through him!” the Canadian sharp shooter warned. “I’m so excited, thank you!”
Serena said violence is not the solution of any problem and that no one deserves to lose his life because of the colour.
Gun violence has touched Serena and her family really hard in the past, with the American player losing her elder half-sister Yetunde Price in a drive-by shooting in Compton in September 2003.
Williams banned herself from talking about the “22” as this year’s Wimbledon entered its business end. “She really played an unbelievable match”, said Kerber, who hadn’t appeared in a major final until beating Williams in Melbourne.
Kerber saved the first, but she could not save the second after being forced out of position by a powerful Williams forehand.
“But I will be able to definitely place this one”.
The reigning Olympic champions beat Timea Babos of Hungary and Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3 6-4 on Centre Court – hours after Serena beat Kerber.

After suffering a dip in form earlier this year, Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou told her she was back to her best at the French Open and the message finally sunk in at Wimbledon.
For Venus it was a consolation after she lost to Kerber in Thursday’s singles semi-finals. Beyonce and her husband Jay Z attended Final of Wimbledon. “And I was like, ‘What does that mean?’ He just said that he felt I was different when I sent that text”.
She replied: “I prefer the word, one of the greatest “athletes” of all time”. Chris Evert (7 at the French Open) is the only other woman in the Open era (from 1968) with as many as seven titles at one Grand Slam event.
She said that was because she was calmer than ever – having chose to accept some “tough losses” and carry on. Anyone, any kid out there that wants to be something, has dreams.
