Serena to rest for a week due to elbow injury
Serena Williams in her first-round match against Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium, whom she brushed aside 6-2, 6-1.
“I was having some pain in my elbow, and I felt a little bit in my match”, says Williams in an interview. “But this morning it really exploded [in practice]…I really couldn’t hit serves”. “I don’t want to make it worse”.
Unfortuanately I didn’t have a lot of time to deal with the injury and fix it. I played a lot of tournaments, but playing here wouldn’t have made things better.
By winning the 2015 Wimbledon title, she has already achieved a second Serena Slam – holding all four Majors simultaneously. “Speaking about the pain that is forcing her to skip the Swedish Open, Williams said”.
While there is now no word on the severity of the injury, her status for the U.S. Open could be in question depending on the health of her elbow. “I was so desperate to do it. After that, I’ve just been really enjoying myself”.

Still, if the injury is a minor one, Williams should be in good shape, even though she’s missing a tune-up opportunity at the Swedish Open.
Strycova next faces Swedish seventh-seed Johanna Larsson, who beat Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-3, 7-5.
