Serena Williams beats out horse to win SI Sportsperson of the Year
The tennis star has been named 2015 Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated, becoming the first sole female recipient of this honor since Mary Decker in 1983. This was also the year she returned to Indian Wells, a tournament that stigmatized Williams’ race back in 2001.
Sandberg said Williams tucked her two children, 10 and 8, into bed and told them stories “about her life and about trying and the times it was hard-and what she wants for them”. But I believe that a horse should not win Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsperson of the Year” award.
I know this is a shocking hot take from me, and one that will make people furious. This is not just an accomplishment for me, but for my whole team.
I keep emphasizing that because there is a bit of an uproar over Sports Illustrated’s decision to give the honor to Serena.
As the Sports Illustrated article points out, Williams has crossed over from the sports world, into the world of celebrity, too.

Williams was ranked number one every week for the second consecutive year, and her three successive grand slam wins to start 2015 lifted her within one of Steffi Graf’s record 22 singles titles in the professional era.
Even though the title is clearly called SportsPERSON of the Year, some horse racing fans were upset that American Pharoah, a Triple Crown winning race horse, didn’t get this prestigious honour. To be fair, American Pharoah is not just any horse.
Last year’s victor was San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who won the honor after leading his team to 2014 World Series title.
There is no possible debate, that American superstar Serena Williams is one of the greatest ever tennis players to ever pick up a racket and step onto the court, dominating the sport for the past couple of decades now. “It’s about who actually deserves the award and who should be eligible for the award”. “She was a terrific candidate in a year of terrific candidates”.
