Serena Williams honored as SI’s Sportsperson of the Year
Serena Jameka Williams is wrapping up the year 2015 with the title of ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ from Sports Illustrated magazine. She narrowly missed the first calendar year Grand Slam when she suffered an upset loss during the US Open in September.

The world No. 1 stopped at the 2km mark of her Serena Williams Live Ultimate Run, held at Miami Beach, and hopped into a cab, which took her to the finish line. “Her extraordinary accomplishments on and off the court this year made the most deserving candidate for this award and also brought about the ideal opportunity to officially designate it as the Sportsperson of the Year moving forward”. “I didn’t run the whole way this year, but next year I will”, she said after the race ended. Trump, who attended Serena’s U.S. Open quarterfinal match this year against older sister Venus, declared his candidacy in June. “It just feels like the right time to make the change”. Williams is the first individual woman to be selected to the honor since track champion Mary Decker in 1983.
“Men’s sports has dominated until recently, when women’s sports has grown in popularity, and the competition is better than ever”, Fichtenbaum said.
