Serena Williams reaches Australian Open final
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Serena Williams is one win away from another Grand Slam milestone after beating Agnieszka Radwanska 6-0, 6-4 in an Australian Open semifinal that was nearly a non-contest between the players who’ll be Nos.
Kerber, who was nearly dumped out of the Australian Open in the first round as she saved a match point in a second-set tie-break against Misaki Doi, added: “It’s a special moment, a special feeling to get there right now, to be in the final”.
A former World No.2, Radwanska pulled up more soundly in the second set, leveling proceedings at 3-3 after falling behind an early break, and pushing Williams to produce her best tennis in the final game – which she opened with three of the eight aces she hit on the day. Broken twice before she sat down for the first proper interval, Radwanska won just seven points in a first set lasting just 20 minutes.
Williams also appeared to see a lull in her game, committing 13 unforced errors in the second set – but with 24 winners, and Radwanska managing 3, Williams dominated the court, and with brilliant cross-court coverage took some impossible-seeming shots to combat any challenge Radwanska sent her way. “I don’t think anyone can really play on that level”.
Before arriving at Melbourne Park, Konta had won only four of her previous nine matches at grand slam level. She’ll face Angelique Kerber in the finale Sunday after she defeated Johanna Konta 7-5, 6-2 in the other semifinals match.
Triple ace finish In her 16th Australian Open, Williams, who said this week she had no plans to retire any time soon, got on the front foot immediately, and effortlessly.
“I’m really excited to be in another final; it kind of blows my mind. The semifinal of a Grand Slam isn’t a bad thing”, she said.
‘I definitely block it out, ‘ Williams said.
“I’m really looking forward to playing against Serena in the final”, Kerber said. The set then proceeded on serve until the 11th game when Kerber broke Konta for the third time before serving it out.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Agnieszka Radwanska and hasn’t dropped a set all tournament.
Williams began in ominous fashion breaking the Pole’s serve in the first game with Radwanska’s lack of power highlighted by the blistering nature of the American’s returns.
“I feel I’m playing the best I can”.
“Unbelievable serve. Everything, she was going for it”.
Williams, however, broke again in the ninth game and then served out with three aces to seal a match in which she belted 42 winners to Radwanska’s four.
The win set her up for a tilt at Graf’s Open-era record of 22 Grand Slam titles, with the American on 21 after winning the Australian and French Opens and Wimbledon a year ago. “When I’m forced to play better, I do well”.
“I’m not even angry because I know she was just playing too good today”.
