Serena Williams Wears Stuart Weitzman On ‘Sports Illustrated’ Cover
Serena Williams, the most dominant person in the sport of tennis, has won Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year award.
Williams had a stand-out year this year, with three Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon) under belt, a 53-3 record and nabbing her seventh WTA Player of the Year award.
Williams took to Instagram to post the magazine cover and to express her gratitude to Sports Illustrated for the title.
“For Sports Illustrated to recognise my hard work, dedication and sheer determination with this award gives me hope to continue on and do better”.
“I didn’t run the whole way this year, but next year I will”, Williams said in the Facebook video. I am beyond honored.
Serena Williams of the US returns the ball to Roberta Vinci of Italy during their 2015 US Open Women’s singles semifinals match at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in NY.
Other contenders this year included golf’s Jordan Spieth who won two majors and finished 2nd and 4th in the other two.
Williams also has her own line of clothing and accessories, which she presented on the New York Fashion Week runway this past September.
It noted that Williams made a powerful statement by returning to play a tournament at Indian Wells for the first time since 2001 when she was jeered by the crowd and, according to her family, suffered racist slurs.
Although a number of Twitter users questioned Williams’ magazine cover, “Scandal” star Kerry Washington praised the tennis champion for slaying the cover.
Congrats Serena! The tennis superstar beat out American Pharaoh, the Kansas City Royals and soccer star Lionel Messi for the coveted title this year, and we can’t think of anyone more deserving of the title. Said one, “Serena was spectacular, but American Pharoah is the man!”.
After an already fantastic year, Serena just closed out 2015 with a bang.
For My Take, you can always find a good debate when Sports Illustrated names it’s Sportsperson of the Year. Every year it presents the Sports Person of the Year award to “the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement”.
