Serena Williams wins Wimbledon for historic 22nd grand slam title
Serena Williams of the USA returns to Angelique Kerber of Germany in their ladies’ singles final during the Wimbledon Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, in London, Britain, 09 July 2016.
If she wasn’t already one of the best tennis players ever, Serena Williams solidified her case Saturday by winning Wimbledon in straight sets for her 22nd Grand Slam title.
The defending Champion has emerged victorious after downing German fourth seed Angelique Kerber, first timer in a Wimbledon final.
“If I’m honest, coming so close, feeling it, not being able to quite get there”, she said.
There had been some thought that Williams was really stung by her loss to Vinci in NY, that it was too big a disappointment to push aside and lingered, somehow, when she followed with the setbacks against Kerber and Muguruza. “She is someone who beats records”, the Frenchman said after watching Williams at Wimbledon finally crack that magic number following three failed attempts over the past 10 months. “But it’s me, and it’s created why I have 22 Grand Slam titles”. If I can just play my game, I know I have a really good chance at winning this match.’ Her humilty, her fight for equal prize money inspired many people.
Williams said she had learned that obsessing about numbers was no good for anyone, suggesting that the shackles are now off and the pressure would be reduced. Even British Royalty saluted the tennis player, with Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton appearing in a video posted by Williams on her Snapchat account.
The athlete faced a blistering wind on Centre Court to claim the title, tying with Steffi Graf’s Grand Slam record of 22 major wins.
“Unfortunately I definitely do see myself differently when I lose which I don’t think is normal”, Williams said. The sisters, on the other hand did win the doubles title.
Commenting on the same, Kerber said there is still a long way to go to match Serena’s level.
The set looked destined for a tiebreak but, at 5-6 15-15, Kerber hit two rash unforced errors in a row. Kerber, whose average first serve measured just 93 miles per hour compared to Williams’ 109 mph, was only broken twice, once in the first set and once in the second. So at a certain point you’re going to make one or two mistakes and Serena did the job.
Serena Williams put the icing on the cake of another magnificent Wimbledon campaign by teaming up with sister Venus. In the photo, Williams is sprawled out across the court taking in her sweet success. She has reached the final in seven of the last eight Grand Slam events.
But the far more significant reward is the knowledge she has reestablished her supremacy at a time when doubters were beginning to question the 34-year-old’s hunger after consecutive Slam final defeats this year.
