Serena Williams Wins Wimbledon, On Brink Of Tennis History
She is just one major title behind Graf on the Open era leaderboard and within three of all-time record holder Court’s tally of 24.
Williams, the first woman to reach the finals of all four majors consecutively since Justine Henin in 2006, is heavily favoured to defeat Muguruza, a Grand Slam final debutant who has just one tour-level title compared to Serena’s 67.
Serena Williams holds all four major tennis titles after her Wimbledon victory Saturday but she wants more.
A Muguruza double-fault and a net-cord calmed Williams’ nerves, however, and she converted her second match point when Muguruza hit wide, although silenced briefly reigned as both players seemed unsure whether the ball had clipped a line.
Now, about that Grand Slam.
Wimbledon is the only one of the four Grand Slam tournaments that is played on grass.
“I just thought, Oh, man, I’ve won New York three times in a row”. She had missed the 2002 Australia Open because of an injury, then she won the French, Wimbledon and U.S. Open that season followed by the 2003 Australian.
“I really hate losing”.
‘I can’t believe I’m standing here with another Serena Slam.’.
“I feel like I’m more fit and I feel like I can do more than I could back then”.
This year, having boycotted the tournament at Indian Wells with the rest of her family since 2001, when they were assailed by racist abuse, Williams returned to make peace.
Muguruza lost the first set and still trails 5-4 in the second but is serving to even the second set.
Yet her achievement, at 33, has been even more impressive because of the world No. 1’s continuous ability to come back from the brink, time and time again.
On Saturday evening, hours after admiring the gold letters of her name on the board in a hallway of the Centre Court building listing Wimbledon’s champions, Williams sat with a small group of reporters for one final interview. “He’s been good for the game”, Federer said about Djokovic, who beat him in five sets in the 2014 final at the All England Club.
“You’re thinking, ‘She won five times this, ‘” Muguruza said.
“I’m very proud and happy to be here”, Muguruza said.
Williams was pushed to her limits time and again at Wimbledon as she survived a treacherous draw that included showdowns with ex- world number ones Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and sister Venus. If we look at the results we achieved I can’t deny it. How did I manage to have such a long career?
As if all that wasn’t enough, Williams surpassed Martina Navratilova by almost four weeks as the oldest women’s grand slam victor in the Open Era.
American Maureen Connolly completed the first Grand Slam in 1953, Australian Margaret Court executed it in 1970, and German Steffi Graf recorded the Golden Slam in 1988 by adding the Olympic gold medal in Seoul.
Dominic Lipinski/AP Despite a shaky serve, Serena Williams wins in straight-sets for 8th Wimbledon crown. “They’ve done much better in scheduling now so at least you have a few months off. When we played, it was 12 months a year”.
But a vintage Federer got the break he needed two games later, converting on his sixth set point with an easy forehand volley victor after yet another hotly contested point.
