Serena Williams Withdraws From China Open and WTA Finals
William’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou told ESPN earlier this week that she was intensely disappointed after missing out on a fifth consecutive Grand Slam crown and hinted that she may withdraw from the remaining tournaments of the season.
“When she lost in Toronto, she was very disappointed, but we went back to practice the morning after because she wanted to win the US Open”, Mouratoglou said, according to ESPN’s Melissa Isaacson.
“I’m a fierce competitor and I want to compete as well as I can, for as long as I can”, she said.
“When the motivation comes back, which I don’t doubt it will, then it will be time to start tournaments again”.
With Drake’s reputation as a ladies’ man, TV host Wendy Williams expressed her worry over the budding romance. “I plan to return to practising and participating in exhibition matches later this year”.
Her semifinals loss to Vinci at Flushing Meadows that halted her calendar slam, (which can be considered one of the biggest upsets in women’s tennis), seems to shaken Serena to her core. The Frenchman let he didn’t have Serena in the mind set for that was a minimum of in print an uncomplicated contest.
The veteran coach said he thought Williams “was not in the right mindset” against Roberta Vinci because she had defeated the Italian star handily in their four previous matches, though also acknowledged in the past he has found “a way to make her be better on those days”. “And on this day, I did not”.
Williams celebrated her 34th birthday on Saturday and will end the season as the No. 1 ranked player in the world.
“I don’t doubt she will have the motivation to win more Grand Slams and reach records”, Mouratoglou said. “But I like that because it’s just about having high expectations and that’s what champions have and I think the same way”.
Serena Williams may be in line for an extended break to finish the year.
Serena won three Grand Slams this season – the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon.
