Seriously, there is a Pepsi smartphone coming our way
No, Pepsi is not about to build a new smartphone. The company made it clear that it won’t be manufacturing the phones, instead it’ll be licensing its brand to a partner (there’s really no shortage of phone makers in China).
The rumors are true: Pepsi (NYSE:PEP) is apparently making an Android phone called the Pepsi P1. Possibly. But what if it only cost $200, and it was being sold by Pepsi?
A separate report from Mobipicker claims that the phone will be revealed at an event in Beijing October 20.
Specs-wise, the Pepsi P1 will reportedly feature a MediaTek MT6592 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and 5.5 1080p display. Lastly, it packs 3000 mAh of battery, and will run Android 5.1 Lollipop. The latter is a move that we’ve seen other brands (like Kodak) attempt in the past, one that nearly always produces pretty terrible results.
“Available in China only, this effort is similar to recent globally licensed Pepsi products which include apparel and accessories”, the spokeswoman said. Well, PepsiCo has confirmed the rumour and said it plans to make smartphones and accessories in China.
The Pepsi P1 seems to have a metallic finishing for its case, including capacitive buttons, a fingerprint sensor and an emblazoned Pepsi logo, both of which are located on the rear end of the handset, .
The company stated it will not manufacture the phone, but license the device to a brand partner.
