Several Dead in Shooting at BPM Festival in Mexico

Following the deadly shootings which took place at the Blue Parrot around 2:45 am on Monday morning, The BPM Festival have now released an official statement. Among the dead, according to a statement from the BPM Festival, were three members of the security team, trying to keep revellers safe inside.

Video footage published on social media shows a chaotic scene outside the club as people fled.

The Blue Parrot nightclub is one of the best-known nightspots in Playa, a popular beach destination located just 45 minutes south of Cancun. “We immediately threw ourselves to the ground as the gunman continued shooting, after he killed a guard at the entrance”, he said.

“We thought it was fireworks placed in the club, then we realized that someone had entered through the exit door and had begun shooting”, Qassem said.

Valerie Lee, digital editor for the United States edition of Mixmag, also tweeted that she had witnessed the shooting.

State officials gave the death toll and said two Canadians, one Italian and one Colombian person “all BPM employees” were among the dead.

“There is a large cement wall so we crouched underneath waiting to see what was happening”.

Marcos Vazquez told NBC News he was with his girlfriend at the nearby La Vaquita nightclub when people were running past them.

The BPM festival, which stands for Bartenders, Promoters, Musicians, was created as a post-New Year’s gathering of industry professionals and has grown to a 70,000+ global gathering of DJs, producers, revelers and industry professionals. People started getting up and again the shots started.

Australian DJ, Wax Motif, said: “Guy 5m in front of us got shot”.

The festival was celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and is popular with foreign visitors and worldwide DJs.

“I raised my head a little bit and saw people running in every direction and saw several people got hit”. Playa Del Carmen is a wealthy region full of upscale tourism and nightlife, making for a robust local drug market.
