Several Russian cruise missiles landed in Iran
“I don’t know if they will”, Carter said earlier in the week.
Syria’s army appeared to regain ground Thursday, after chief of staff General Ali Abdullah Ayoub announced “a vast offensive to defeat the terrorist groups” and restore control over opposition-held areas.
Ayyoub provided no details of the area in which the offensive is being launched or its size and scope. Speaking to journalists while en route from Brussels to Tokyo, Erdogan warned that Ankara could look elsewhere for gas supplies and cancel the construction of its first nuclear power plant, which is being built by Russian Federation.
Before Russia’s entrance into the war, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation stationed anti-missile Patriot batteries in Turkey to protect it from any spillover of the Syrian conflict.
The Russian cruise missiles are known as “Kaliber” missiles and are similar to the American Tomahawk missile.
After the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying that all the missiles had hit their targets.
Russian Federation hasn’t just targeted anti-Assad groups.
Mr Carter said that Russian Federation had failed to give warning about its decision to launch cruise missiles through airspace shared with the US.
As The Times notes, the Russian intervention in Syria came after months of planning between Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, a Shi’ite militant group and Iranian proxy force.
“We gathered military attaches [on Tuesday] and offered them, all our colleagues involved in this work one way or another, to tell us about their targets, actually, if they have such targets, so that we could even more efficiently work against ISIS units and camps”, the Russian defense minister said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, confirmed the advance.
The bombing campaign has already led to speculation Putin is trying to prop up Syrian president Bashar Assad’s brutal regime. But Washington has accused Russian Federation of targeting groups other than IS or Al-Nusra in more than 90 percent of its raids.
“It’s unacceptable, it’s risky, and it’s reckless behavior and it adds to the tensions”, he told CNN.
Erdogan said Turkey had “received information” that 65 people had been killed in Russia’s air strikes on Syria, without specifying further on how the toll was calculated.
“We will assess the latest developments and their implications for the security of the alliance”, Stoltenberg said.
The Pentagon shares the same worries.
The drone encounters took place in an area controlled by ISIS in Syria, US officials reported.
But Russian officials deny ramping up military activity.
He also said he could not confirm reports that Russian missiles had crashed in Iran.
About the CNN report, he said the movement of artillery equipment from Latakia “is likely to be weaponry supplied to the Syrian army as part of military contracts”.
