Several tornadoes likely hit Indiana, Ohio; no bad injuries

That increases to 10 the number of tornadoes for the state. The hardest hit city was Kokomo.

The devastation has forced 220 people to be temporarily placed in shelters, many of whom lived in several large apartment complexes that were heavily damaged, Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight said Thursday morning.

Weather service crews were still assessing the scope of the storms in Indiana. Pence spoke Thursday after touring a neighborhood and businesses hit by Wednesday’s tornado.

Indiana University Kokomo cancelled all events on campus Wednesday evening due to the severe weather.

The National Weather Service confirmed Friday that at least eight tornadoes hit the state during storms Wednesday, including an EF3 tornado with winds of up to 152 mph that slammed the city of Kokomo, about 40 miles north of Indianapolis.

City officials in Indianapolis say emergency crews helped more than 15 people from vehicles stuck in high water from a strong storm.

Another three tornadoes have been confirmed in northeastern Indiana’s Allen, Adams and Wells counties.

The Indianapolis Colts, meanwhile, are providing tickets and concession vouchers to Saturday’s preseason game with the Philadelphia Eagles to the Kokomo football team, including family members and coaches.

The National Weather Service says at least eight tornadoes touched down on Wednesday causing substantial damage.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence came off the campaign trail with running mate Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to return to his home state and view the damage.
