The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for much of New Jersey through 11 p.m. They are expected to merge into a broken squall line as they push south into eastern Kentucky by late afternoon. The main severe weather threat, especially across northern Iowa will be damaging straight line winds but large hail and an isolated tornado is possible as well. However, a more widespread severe event is expected to occur late this afternoon into tonight across the upper Midwest. The storms will gradually weaken overnight. Using their criteria, this means 75 miles per hour plus wind gusts, along with supercell thunderstorms that could produce strong tornadoes.
