‘Sex and the City’ star Cynthia Nixon announces NY gubernatorial bid
She was immediately criticized by a Cuomo ally, who questioned Nixon’s qualifications in a controversial remark. Teachout, who received 34 percent of the vote and carried much of upstate NY, is now Nixon’s campaign treasurer. One user said, “You literally called her an “unqualified lesbian””.
“We need to elect not just more Democrats, but better Democrats”, Nixon said, another big line as Democrats nationally battle for the direction of the party. “But if Washington is a swamp, Albany is a cesspool”.
Nixon’s campaign against Cuomo is about a lot more than just the city’s subway system. His emphasis on aiding Puerto Rico’s recovery from Hurricane Maria and his recent announcement of additional funding for the New York City Housing Authority is aimed at some of those constituencies. The candidate pointed out Cuomo’s ties to long-time aide and close family friend, Joseph Percoco, who was found guilty of three corruption-related charges earlier this month. She never mentions the Democratic governor she’s challenging, Andrew Cuomo, the underwhelming son of the late governor Mario Cuomo. The GOP has blocked passage of bills including the Dream Act, to help children of undocumented immigrants get college aid, a measure to codify the abortion rights in Roe v. Wade into state law, and campaign finance reform.
“The digital fundraising blitz by Nixon campaign manager Nicole Aro refers to “gutter politics” comments by former Council Speaker Christine Quinn in Tuesday’s Post.”
Newly announced candidate for NY governor Cynthia Nixon has criticised current office holder Andrew Cuomo, her Democratic primary opponent, for favouring corporations and the rich over average New Yorkers. Quinn herself is gay. In a hypothetical matchup against Nixon, 66 percent of Democratic voters said they would vote for Cuomo, while 19 percent supported Nixon.
She wrote on her Twitter, ‘I am so proud of @CynthiaNixon, no one cares more than she does about EVERY person getting a fair change and a good education.
While she acknowledged the actress’s support for political causes, Quinn explains that it takes more than that to hold a position in office. The former city council speaker praised the governor’s accomplishments and points out that the Democratic party should be focused on unity instead of primaries. “Minnesotans have a right to be skeptical about whether I’m ready for this challenge and to wonder how seriously I would take the responsibility that I’m asking you to give me”, Franken said in the video clip, the Associated Press reported at the time.
In his video, Aiken stressed the benefits of his newcomer status and the populist appeal a celebrity candidate might offer, saying, “I’m not a politician”.
It’s a left-flank strategy that has had success against Cuomo in the past – almost unknown liberal activist and law professor Zephyr Teachout garnered a surprising 34 percent of the vote in the 2014 Democratic primary. But Cuomo’s team has already told the public how they felt about Nixon’s challenge.
