Shark bite critically injures North shore surfer
A Newport native is in critical condition Friday after he was bitten by a shark in Hawaii, according to a local Hawaiian television station.
Officials said the victim was assisted to shore by another surfer or paddleboarder.
Ocean Safety reports that on Friday morning, a surfer suffered critical injuries to his left leg.
Enright said a 911 call was received at 10:25 a.m. and the victim was already on the beach when rescue crews arrived. First responders took over treatment of the patient and EMS transported him to a trauma center. Officials say they will reassess the situation on Saturday and determine if it is safe for people to enter the water.
Witnesses reported the shark to be 10-12 feet but there is no confirmation on the type of shark. Lifeguards posted warning signs from Laniakea Beach to Waimea Bay.
Colin Cook, who has been living on the North Shore for three years, is originally from Rhode Island.
Best wishes to Colin, and we’re all hoping for a quick recovery. One attack, which occurred in April on Maui, was fatal.
