Sharks attack sea lions off Alcatraz Island
Records from Shark Stewards, a San Francisco-based conservation group, large number of white sharks have been spotted this year in Monterey Bay and off the coast of San Francisco.
In 2009, the San Jose Mercury News reported that researchers from Stanford University, the University of California-Davis and other organisations had found five great white sharks swimming underneath the Golden Gate Bridge between 2007 and 2008 after tagging 179 of white sharks in Northern California between 2000 and 2008. He even hums the “Jaws” theme at one point, and exclaims with glee, “that’s the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life!” a couple of times.
A boy yelled, “That’s a great white!” when the dorsal fin of the shark surfaced on the red plume of blood from the butchered seal. “The tourists were pretty excited”.
The shark can be seen splashing around in the water before parts of the slaughtered animal bob up near the tourists. The ferocious attack was the first filmed incident in San Francisco Bay.
‘It’s actually a sign that maybe the San Francisco Bay is getting a little healthier, that you have top predators like white sharks coming in, ‘ McGuire said. ‘There is the myth of shark infested waters, but we like to say shark inhabited waters’. ‘I guess they can’.
The video posted to YouTube on Friday, October 10th by Chris Shindler shows a White Shark attacking a sea lion – likely one of the hundreds of local sea lions who call the area home. “There’s much higher risks, like getting hit by a boat”, he said.
