Shawn Matthias signs one-year deal with Maple Leafs – Vancity Buzz
Matthias screamed of a player that would get grossly overpaid in the NHL’s silly season, and perhaps that’s what he expected too. Gone, to the Arizona Coyotes – who admitted they picked him up on the advisement of their new stats-heavy assistant GM, John Chayka.
Kadri is coming off a two-year contract with an AAV of $2.9 million and he’ll still be a restricted free agent at the end of this deal (and for one more year after that).
The club re-signed Kadri to a one-year, $4.1 Million deal over the weekend and have to determine what they have in the London, Ontario native before making the decision on a long-term contract extension.
Matthias has developed into a useful depth forward, and scored 18 goals and 27 points for the Canucks this past season.
While this is wonderful for both Matthias and the Leafs, though, where does it leave the Canucks?
Expectations for Nazem Kadri have always been high.
“You can go back to the last couple years and see guys that have come in on one-(year) or short-term deals and parlayed that into a lot of visibility, a lot of good coverage and now they’ll cash in here in July”, said Dubas. This leaves Kadri ineligible to hit free agency until 2018. There’s still talent in Vancouver, without a doubt.
Kadri showed his competitiveness when he was with the Leaf’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
