Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal pleased with opening-day win
For Bristol City, they may have made a losing start to life back in the Championship, but they have a strong side and should enjoy a solid campaign under Cotterill.
Facing a team who were so dominant in League One last season as a tricky task for Wednesday, but they passed it with flying colours with a 2-0 win.
New manager Carvalhal has promised to “fight” to the win the game.
“What I am trying to do is create a new era for the club, to break the last 15 years which was not good for the club”.
Referring to the difficulties City have encountered in the transfer market, Cotterill explained: “We’ve had a tough summer for sure”. We have alternatives and sometimes the foreign players are the second or third alternatives we have.
Asked if he was close to making further new signings, he replied: “No, not really”.
“Ryan doesn’t understand it yet, Callum doesn’t yet and Jonathan doesn’t yet”. If people around you criticise you, you will feel afraid to do something. We had a very good and professional exhibition today.
“The new boys would probably benefit more from training with the other lads at the moment”. I prefer to take step by step and we will see what we do game by game.
“Since the beginning, my aim is to bring in British players”, he added.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “The team is ready to start the competition, we are ready for the Championship and all our preparations have been for this game, which is the most important“.
To make matters worse, left wing-back Joe Bryan limped out of Saturday’s game after 36 minutes with a knee injury.
New signings Jack Hunt and Ross Wallace were substituted and likely to be rested for tomorrow’s League Cup tie with Mansfield Town.
City’s main goal this season must just to be avoid relegation and they will face a stern test in the season-opener against Wednesday.
“Also, Kieran has not played at this level before and he will need time”.
He said: “The first goal was key, if we could have got one before half-time, it would have been a lot better”.
