Sheriff: Brevard deputy critically wounded in shooting
As of 12:30 a.m., the deputy was still in surgery at a local hospital.
A Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputy remains in critical condition after being shot Thursday night in the unincorporated area of Cocoa, Florida.
“I would definitely classify this as an ambush based upon the information that I have right now”, Ivey said.
Ivey said the department was “hurting” and focused on the well-being of the deputy and his family.
The shootout took place on Thursday night at a house in Port St. John and the suspected gunman was wounded by return fire from the deputies.
Ivey said deputies had a warrant to arrest a woman at the home for prostitution.
Ivey, who described the shooting as an ambush, said the suspect opened fire on deputies as they approached the house. But did not name him.The shooter was in stable condition when he was taken to a hospital.
As deputies attempted to arrest a female occupant of the residence, a male exited the residence and fired shots at the deputies, several of which struck a deputy. They were all clearly marked.
The Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident, which is customary.
His identity has not been released.
This is a developing story.
