Sheriff: Multiple deaths, injuries in Kansas attacks
The gunman opened fire at Excel Industries, after police had earlier received reports around 5 pm local time (7.00 am Friday Singapore time) of gunshots on nearby streets which were connected to the workplace attack, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said at a news conference. Second, a person was reported shot in the leg. Third, a report came in about a shooting in the parking lot of Excel.
“The scene is not secure” at Excel Industries in Hesston, a Harvey County dispatcher said. Two of those victims are in serious condition and another is in fair condition.
Wesley Medical Centre is treating three patients, said the facility’s spokesman Susan Burchill. Their conditions are not known. He heard people yelling to others to get out of the building, then heard popping, then saw the shooter, a co-worker he described as typically pretty calm.
“He was coming at everybody”, the employee said.
The shift began at 2:45 p.m. and was supposed to end at 1:15 a.m. A total of of four to seven people, including the gunman, were killed, Walton said.
Numerous law enforcement officers from a variety of agencies were scattered through the Excel parking lot.
People were told to shelter in a safe place because of “an active shooter situation”, authorities told NBC.
Excel Industries manufactures products for turf care, according to the Wichita Eagle.
