Sherri Shepherd Ordered to Pay Child Support for Surrogate Son
Sherri Shepherd’s attempt to save money this holiday season has failed. The actress has tried to have the surrogacy contract voided.
Specifically, the 48-year-old will continue to pay $4,100 per month until the infant turns 13-years-old – where the check amount will increase to $4,600.
“I’m going to be parent enough for the both of us”.
The View co-host lost her bid to have her name removed for the birth certificate of a baby boy she and her ex-husband had via surrogate.
Court papers show Shepherd paid more than $100,000 for a suburban Philadelphia surrogate and supported the pregnancy until she changed her mind as her marriage faltered.
The court’s ruling has bigger implications regarding the surrogacy in the United States.
Sherri Shepherd has been deemed obligated to continue paying child support for her surrogate son.
Melissa Brisman, who owns the surrogacy agency Reproductive Possibilities in Montvale, New Jersey, said: “Surrogates don’t want to feel that someone could want a baby and then just back out”.
“It said: “(Shepherd) does not dispute that she freely entered into the gestational carrier contract.
A Pennsylvania judge ruled in April of this year however that Shepherd was legally the young boy’s mother and as such would be required to contribute to the child’s expenses.
