Shigella outbreak: Bay Area counties see an increase in shigella cases
So far, the Santa Clara County health department has confirmed 24 cases of shigellosis.
Investigators with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department believe the outbreak originated with an employee at Mariscos San Juan No. 3 restaurant in downtown San Jose, who remained unidentified.
The initial report stated that at least 93 people were sickened after eating at Mariscos San Juan Restaurant on 4th Street, but a new report now finds that the number has increased to 110. Of the 110 cases, 92 were patients are Santa Clara County residents, and the remaining 18 patients live in other counties.
Lab tests have confirmed shigellosis, an infectious disease caused by a group of bacteria called shigella, in 49 of the cases.
However, other legitimate user reviews are highly useful for health authorities looking to handle food-poisoning outbreaks in a more efficient manner.
Symptoms of the disease include sudden onset of diarrhea that in a few cases contain blood, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting.
However, the bacteria may also be carried by flies who breed in the contaminated feces.
Gregory Meissner is one of two seafood restaurant customers who filed a lawsuit against the eatery after being stricken with shigella.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the owners of the restaurant, Sergio Becerra Cruz and Lourdes Garcia Becerra, are cooperating with health officials. The symptoms usually go away in 5-10 days. In parallel with the work of health authorities, Yelp reviewers took to the website to report a number of cases.
The infection is very contagious and health officials say people with diarrhea – even mild – must not work; especially people who work in “sensitive occupation”, such as healthcare providers, food service workers, and childcare workers.
Careful, frequent hand washing is extremely important in preventing the continued spread of the outbreak.
