Shock at Oscars as wrong Best Picture victor announced
Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel today admitted that he was “trying not to laugh” during the gaffe and thanked audience member Denzel Washington for his help.
As well as winning Best Picture, Moonlight shone bright for Best Supporting Actor recipient Mahershala Ali, while the film’s director Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney landed Best Adapted Screenplay.
“And the Academy Award…” he said, pausing to glance at the envelope.
In a sense, the preferential ballot is the Oscar’s version of the electoral college. “I wasn’t trying to be amusing”, he explained, laughing awkwardly.
“La La Land”, a contemporary original musical, is set in Los Angeles and stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as an aspiring actress and a tortured jazz musician who fall in love. “I realize that a moment like this is a huge confluence of luck and opportunity”, the actress said as she accepted her prize.
Beatty and Dunaway had the wrong envelope and mistakenly announced that “La La Land” had won the Oscar, when, in fact, “Moonlight” had won.
‘Here’s to the ones who lose.
La La Land was announced as the victor, but Moonlight actually won. I mean, remember previous year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist? They also memorize the results, as the winners are not written anywhere besides in the envelopes, in an attempt to prevent leaks.
Unsure of whether to make the announcement, he turned to his co-presenter who took a look the paper and said the victor was “La La Land”.
A continuous theme of the night was a constant bashing of President Donald Trump.
” We deeply regret the mistakes that were made during the presentation of the Best Picture category during last night’s Oscar ceremony”.
The Oscars were not without non-politics related issues.
When In Memoriam left out notable names from the film industry: numerous viewers of Oscars 2017 were not pleased with the In Memoriam played on stage this year.
“It’s a movie that has a powerful emotional pull and the most emotional movies tend to do best at the Oscars”.
Nonetheless, like La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz who called out the real best picture victor on stage, Stone remained classy in giving props for Moonlight, “I’m an actor and I dream of this kind of thing and in a realistic context, I f***king love Moonlight”.
