Shock moment cops pin down one-legged black man after ‘taking his crutches’
“From my vantage point on the shore of 8th street, I could see the man reluctantly hand over his crutches”.
The latest incident comes a year since unarmed black teen Michael Brown was shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
She said the police tried repeated to take the crutches off despite the man saying “These are my crutches. You’re having him partially nude while you pin him down on his prosthetic leg?” said journalist Chaédria LaBouvier as she captured the scene. Which is to say, that we’ve normalized and habitualized the kind of policing in San Francisco and the rest of America that brutalizes the most vulnerable people, which strips them of their human dignity, the agency to their bodies - to walk with crutches when physically disabled, to have this body unviolated - when in actuality, they are whom the police are especially supposed to be protecting.
The fact that San Francisco cops dealing with a one-legged, black homeless guy called for backup was the most troubling aspect of the whole incident, a witness told RT. What started as a handful of officers grew to more than a dozen.
For what it’s worth, on the video witnesses can be heard speaking out against the over zealousness police demonstrated, but to no avail as cops continued to abuse the one-legged man. While filming the incident, LaBouvier can be heard noting the “lack of respect” for the suspect as his clothes were pulled off during the incident. “It is often twisted and backwards in the video”, LaBouvier noted.
According to San Francisco Police spokeswoman Grace Gatpandan, officers confronted the 42-year-old man, who had an outstanding felony warrant, because he was “waving around wooden sticks” and detained him for a mental health evaluation.
His pants also fall down at one point only to be pulled up by an officer a few minutes later.
In her post, LaBouvier highlights the paradox of the situation. One block away are the headquarters of Uber, which is on pace to be the fastest-growing company in history. And not to my knowledge, did any of their employees or representatives come out to look at what the police were doing.
Label this another case of police brutality, fear and stupidity.
It’t unknown why police cuffed the man featured in the video. “There weren’t 14 at the scene, but literally someone made that call and that’s what is troubling, that’s what is a problem”, LaBouvier added.
