Shooter’s friend appears in federal court
By later that year, the charges said, the duo was making plans to attack the library or cafeteria at Riverside Community College, where both men had been students, with pipe bombs and guns. Marquez’s link to the carnage in San Bernardino stunned his boss, Jerry Morgan, owner of Morgan’s Tavern in Riverside, Calif. The couple used guns – two of which were purchased by Marquez – to kill 14 people and injure 22 at the Inland Regional Center.
According to court records released Thursday, an apparently distraught Enrique Marquez was also considering suicide.
Authorities are handling investigating as a matter of terror.
They would then escape and move to a location along the 91 freeway, where Farook would throw pipe bombs onto the eastbound lanes during rush hour and the two would gun down fleeing drivers, with Farook walking on the roadway itself and Marquez stationed in a nearby hillside.
Marquez, who had worked at Walmart and at a bar recently, also is related to Farook’s family by marriage. In what friends called a “sham marriage”, Marquez was paid to marry a Russian woman so she could gain entry to the U. S. Officials said the woman’s sister is married to Mr. Farook’s brother. Farook introduced his new neighbor to Islam and, later, to “radical Islamic ideology”, according to the criminal complaint against Marquez.
The affidavit said Marquez told investigators he and Farook learned to make improvised explosive devices from Inspire Magazine, the official publication of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
When asked why the Times had attached an editors’ note to the December 12 article instead of a correction, the representative directed Re/code toward a blog post by the paper’s public editor, Margaret Sullivan, that says editors’ notes “may indicate a violation of ethical standards or other serious lapse”. There has now been an arrest in connection with the mass slaying – friend and neighbor of the couple, 24-year-old Enrique Marquez Jr. has been arrested in buying the rifles used in the attacks, as well as conspiring in at least two future other attacks.
“Mr. Marquez conspired with Mr. Farook to commit vicious attacks, as set forth in today’s charges”, said United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker.
Marquez has told investigators he didn’t know about the plans for the San Bernardino attack, US officials have said, and the complaint against him does not allege that Marquez was involved.
“I don’t know how this happened….”
“Marquez admitted that prior to the attack, he would first deploy to the hills south of the freeway as an overwatch for Farook”.
Marquez answers, “Yes. Oh my God”.
As for the killers, the bodies of Farook and Malik were buried Tuesday, 13 days after the attacks, according to the Law Offices of David S. Chesley, the California attorney who represents Farook’s family.
Authorities say Marquez legally purchased the high-powered guns used by Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife to kill 14 people at a holiday gathering of Farook’s health department co-workers on December 2.
