After what appeared to be a strong turnout for Thanksgiving sales, some early morning reports indicate that traffic to malls may be slower on Black Friday than a year ago as retailers spread the deals out throughout the week.
The National Retail Federation, the nation’s largest retail trade group, expects holiday sales to rise 3.6 percent to $655.8 billion for November and December, better than the 3 percent growth seen for those months a year ago. For some shoppers, electronics at a big discount proved an irresistible draw.
“It’s just fun. A lot of people have really wild things on”.
A few hours later, more stores started to open in the mall: Macy’s at 5 p.m., the majority at 6 p.m. and a few as late as 9 p.m.
According to a recent article in the Star Tribune, only three Mall of America stores, Crayola Experience, Sears Holdings Corp (NASDAQ: SHLD) and Macy’s Inc (NYSE: M), chose to remain open on Thanksgiving.
Sluggish sales also have prompted department stores to close stores and do more with their often-valuable real estate.
