Short, sharp earthquake hits San Francisco Bay Area
The epicenter was just 3 miles from Oakland, and was a shallow 5.4 kilometers beneath the surface.
A magnitude 4.0 quake hit off the coast of Baja Sunday night.
The BART subway system paused operations while workers inspected the tracks in the tunnel that goes under San Francisco Bay.
Residents all over the Bay Area reported that they felt the temblor, but there were no reports of injuries. Trains were quickly running again. The depth of the quake was 3.3 miles.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor occurred at 6:49 a.m.in the Piedmont area of Oakland.
Scores of people took to Twitter nearly as soon as the jolts ended.
Five minutes later Tom Yamaguchi wrote: “At my West #Berkeley house, felt like a door slamming, then a quick strong shake. I knocked a few books off my shelf to pretend I was there though”.
Previously, scientists estimated the probability for such a quake at 4.7 percent over 30 years.
