Shubhankar Sharma finishes tied 9th World Golf championships at Mexico
― Reuters picMEXICO CITY, March 4 ― Phil Mickelson dismissed Shubhankar Sharma as a member of the media at the WGC-Mexico Championship yesterday, but the veteran American will not mistake the Indian when they play together in the final threesome today.
For the first time in 102 tournaments around the world, dating to the summer of 2013 when he won the British Open at Muirfield, the 47-year-old Mickelson showed he still had the stuff to beat players who weren’t even born when he collected the first of his 43 victories on the PGA Tour. “I’ll keep trying to do what I’ve been doing for the next two days”. Also two shots behind were Masters champion Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello, who each had a 69.
SINGAPORE (AP) – Michelle Wie made a 36-foot birdie putt from just off the 18th green to win the HSBC Women’s World Championship and capture her first title since the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open. He has 43 victories on the PGA Tour and 46 around the world, and has four consecutive top 10s for the first time since 2005. “I was telling to Baaz (his caddie Gurbaaz Singh), who’s on my bag there, watching all of these guys on the range, it just seems like there’s a TV in front of me and I’m watching them through the TV”, said Sharma. I know, respect and admire how great these young players are.
“This is hopefully going to propel me on to better stuff”.
Sharma blasted his opening tee shot two feet from the cup for a tap-in eagle. Thomas missed a 9-footer for par to force a second playoff hole. “The little bogeys I made were three-putts”. I’m probably more proud of myself than I’ve ever been.
The fact Mickelson’s putting helped him seal the win was fitting. “It takes a lot of patience and calmness for me to stay in it as much as I did, and that shot on 18 was unbelievable”.
Sharma, the 21-year-old from India who started the final day with a two-shot lead, didn’t make his first birdie until the 12th hole, and fell away with four bogeys in his final four holes to finish six shots behind the leaders in a tie for ninth position.
“The nerves got me, maybe”, Shin said.
“I’ve been a professional golfer for 10 years now, and I know where he comes from and where he comes from is not very different to where I’ve come from”. “But other than that, struck the ball well and I hung in there”. I drove it well. “I couldn’t be in a better situation”. “But to have the believe that I was going to get there and finally break through and do it feels incredible”. He had to settle for a 68, though he still was just three shots behind, along with Brian Harman (68) and Xander Schauffele (70).
