Sibling Rivalry: Google Pixel XL vs Nexus 6P

Yesterday, Google announced two new smartphones, the Pixel and the Pixel XL. The Pixel is the first phone to ship with Google Assistant which lets you interact with your phone and other Google services easily with simple voice and contextual commands. While the Pixels sold by Verizon will be the same as the ones sold by Google when it comes to hardware, things will be a bit different when it comes to software.

The search engine company also introduced the Google Assistant, an artificial intelligence feature found in the Pixel smartphone. Worse, can we trust Google to issue updates to these phones in the future if it already broke its promise on the Nexus program?

Google’s new virtual-reality headset, Daydream View, will differ from other headsets like Samsung’s Gear VR in having a companion motion controller and compatibility with a wide range of phones, including Pixel. While well regarded, Nexus handsets were mostly a way for Google to experiment.

These devices aim to compete against the current line-up of flagship smartphones, particularly Apple’s iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

“It has enabled people to get answers to any question, converse with faraway friends and find their way to remote locations-or just their way home”, a Droga5 spokesperson said in an email.

If you’re feeling creepy about a speaker listening to your conversations, Google says you can turn the microphone off.

Available for pre-order from Verizon in the U.S., the Pixel smartphones will also be available in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, arriving in Quite Black, Really Blue, and Very Silver shades.

Google also gives Pixel owners free, unlimited cloud storage at their original resolutions for photos in Google Photos. You’ll need a new Android phone, as existing phones won’t have the right hardware. With these handsets, what you see is what you get (well, sort of – but we’ll get to that in sec).
