Siemian solidifies QB job in Denver’s 17-9 win over Rams
Quarterback Trevor Siemian gets a chance to prove the offense is better when Denver faces the Los Angeles Rams’ strong defense in Saturday’s preseason game. But how do the rest of the guys stack up? Coach Gary Kubiak raved about the progress that Lynch has made.
Siemian took part in some drills early and then handed the ball off in a scrimmage but stood by while Mark Sanchez and Paxton Lynch ran passing plays. Two possessions ending in punts after three plays isn’t exactly what the Broncos want to see in a dress rehearsal, but this is a team that led the National Football League in pass attempts over the first two preseason games, so they wanted to see if they could set up the pass by establishing the run.
Remember last season? Peyton Manning was the starter, got benched for Brock Osweiler and then returned in the final game of the season instead of Osweiler, leading the Broncos to a Super Bowl victory, riding one of the best defenses in National Football League history.
Lynch should find out his place in Denver’s quarterback rotation later this week before Saturday’s 3rd Pre -Season game against the Rams.
The Broncos are interested in testing Lynch with their second-team offense. “It’s very, very hard”, Kubiak said.
Lynch had his struggles in relief of Siemian, going just 6-of-13 for 57 yards but he did abstain from turning the ball over for the first time all preseason.
They passed on the opportunity to acquire Colin Kaepernick this offseason and instead traded for Mark Sanchez. But after a replay review, the Rams were awarded the ball.
Fisher’s response: “No. We said it’s going to be a process; it’s going to take time for Jared”. “But you’re not going to see him play 60 plays”.
It was Sanchez’s job to lose when training camp began and he’s apparently done just that with a slew of turnovers in the preseason.
Starting L.A. quarterback Case Keenum directed drives to set up the first two field goals.
The Rams enter this game maintaining a level of uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position.
“I just worry about my room and what I have to do”, he said. Instead, I’m going to side with the over as I’m thinking with so many battles going on both sides are going to put it in overdrive with this being the last week that really means something to most teams. “I don’t quit. I’ll take this thing down the wire if that’s what it takes, and that’s what it looks like, so let’s go”. At this point in my career I would love to play for a contender. “I think he was a little sore coming out but he worked through it and hopefully he’ll be better (Thursday)”.
He is also going to be the opening day starter for the defending Super Bowl champions. “I think he’s had a great preseason”. Avowed Chiefs nut Matt Verderame joked endlessly in the office that the Broncos are so clueless that they’ll name Siemian the starter.
