Siena poll shows Clinton, Trump favored among NY voters

New York’s primary is April 19.
A new poll conducted by Siena College shows Hillary Clinton as the most popular presidential candidate among registered New York Democratic voters and Donald Trump a favorite for Republicans. Bernie Sanders by a 55 to 34 percent margin, according to a new Siena Research Institute poll. Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas, both of whom would capture 16 percent of the Republican vote if the NY primary was held today.
In a hypothetical Clinton-Trump matchup, Clinton came out on top 57-32 percent among registered voters in the state, the poll showed.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is the only other Republican in double digits, with 11% support.
Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they would vote for Clinton if the primary was held immediately, while 28 percent said they would vote for U.S. Sen.
NY hasn’t gone Republican in a general election since Ronald Reagan won in 1984, and Greenberg does not expect a repeat in 2016.
Sixty-five percent of New York Democrats think Clinton will be the next president, while 32 percent of Republicans think it will be Trump.
Clinton – who represented NY in the Senate from 2001 through 2008 – has a higher favorability rating among Democrats than Sanders, with 73 percent viewing Clinton in a positive light and 63 percent saying the same about Sanders.
Siena polled 935 voters in the state between January 31 and February 3, including 434 Democrats and 235 Republicans.
The front-runners in New York’s presidential primaries hail from the Empire State. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.8%.
