Simone Biles chosen as Team USA’s flag bearer for Closing Ceremony
The five-time gymnastics medalist – four of those medals were gold – will carry the U.S. flag into Sunday’s closing ceremony, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced Saturday.
One of the more striking images of these Olympics will have to be the 4-foot-9 Biles holding the massive flag of her country as her Team USA teammates paraded into Maracana Stadium.
The 19-year-old topped the podium four times in Brazil, collecting five medals in total, and is excited to play her part on Sunday.
She is one of only four women to accomplish the feat in Olympic history, joining Larissa Latynina (1956), Vera Caslavska (1968) and Ekaterina Szabo (1984). She also won a bronze on balance beam. The gymnast looked adorable in white shorts and a matching shirt, and nearly seemed to be taken down by the giant flag, but she held it proudly with a smile on her face as she helped lead the procession inside.
Simone Biles, center, was in high demand during the Closing Ceremonies. And we’ll add: The moment was light in part because we’ve all become used to expecting greatness from Biles.
For her part, Biles said,”Every single day that I’ve had here has been like a dream come true and it just keeps on getting better”.
If anything, the reactions to Simone Biles as flag bearer at the closing ceremonies proved that the only thing more powerful than gold, is Black Girl Magic.
She was chosen by a vote from other Team USA members.
