Simone Biles wins spot on US Women’s Gymnastics team
Douglas, who survived falls on beam on both nights of competition scored a 117.450 overall in her disappointing seventh place finish while Kocian, primarily a bars specialist, placed eighth with a 117.050 over two nights of competition.
“This is such a distinctly talented team that will make history and be remembered forever”, Olympic gold medalist and NBC commentator Nastia Liukin tells ET. Having her experience and wisdom will do nothing but lead a positive path for Team USA. If she is worse than she was here, she puts pressure on the entire team. She will be an alternate for the team at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
And Kocian made her most convincing case for the team on Sunday. “So when we watched her during her routines, I just knew”.
Martinez had edged Eccleston by. “But I’d know I gave it my all”. Aly is 22, which in gymnastics years means she’s over the hill, but at the trials she was one of the most consistent performers of the weekend.
The top finisher in the all-around is guaranteed a spot on the five-woman Olympic team.
The outcome revealed Sunday night was bittersweet for Ashton Locklear.
Aly Raisman is headed to Rio.
And would Raisman feel the same way if she’d been left off the team after giving some of her best performances? She earned her spot. Karolyi, a US gymnastics legend, will retire after the Rio Games, which adds an extra layer of passion to this year’s competition.
The SAP Center in San Jose, California was almost pitch black.
There will be no Olympic double for Allyson Felix.
Also off the table – the 200-400 Olympic double.
Tori Bowie and Deajah Stevens finished first and second.
Laurie Hernandez is only 16, the youngest on the team by several years, and was reportedly a favorite to make the Olympic team after winning the junior all-around national title in 2015. Hernandez came in second, 2.1 points back, and Raisman was third. An alternate can step in if one of the five team members goes down ill or injured and the three alternates will train with the US Olympic Team in Rio as well. She’s been world champion three years in a row (and is, according to the Huffington Post, the first American woman to do that in 42 years), and has won world championship medals 14 medals total. Runner-up Kyle Landon had not jumped the minimum height, or standard, to compete in the Olympics.
It wouldn’t have mattered if Molly Huddle celebrated this one early.
In track parlance, a sprinter doesn’t necessarily have to be “fast” to succeed in the 400 – a full lap around the track in which technique is more important than pure speed.
The American record-holder in the event finished in 15 minutes, 5.01 seconds. Now, she is really going to live up to her grandma name.
Locklear and Madison Kocian were the strongest hopefuls on the uneven bars, which is considered the weakest link for Team USA.
“It was such a relief because it was so nerve-wracking”, she said. It didn’t matter that Biles’ spot was already secure after capturing the all-around, extending a long streak that shows no signs of abating. Raisman, the 2012 team captain, will also join the team after winning three medals in London. Due to these setbacks, she had to sit out the entire 2014 competitive season.
It will be a special year, as Marta Karolyi, the 74-year-old architect of the program, has said that it will be her last.
