“You might be pretty good at it”.
“That’s something I definitely struggled with a lot”, she said.
In the wake of police brutality that has strained race relations in the US recently, Manuel hopes that her gold medal will bring some “hope and change” to the issues back home.
“This win helps bring hope and change to some of the issues that are going on in the world”, she said.

Katie Ledecky (@katieledecky), incoming freshman, who goes for her fourth gold medal of the Rio Games tonight in the women’s 800 free and earned a silver medal Saturday in the women’s 400 free relay along with Manuel: “AHHH!”
Michael Phelps cruised to a convincing win in the 200 metre individual medley, while Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak shared gold Phelps won by nearly two seconds at the Rio Games on Thursday to secure his 22nd Olympic gold medal. “I hope I’m an inspiration”. “My goal coming in was to get on the medal stand after seeing how I swam in prelims and semifinals.
