Simone Manuel wins silver in women’s 50 free
Simone Manuel anchored the USA women’s 4×100 metres medley relay team to the 1,000th gold medal in her country’s summer Olympic history on Saturday, and the second of her career.
Manuel had already won the gold medal in the women’s 100-meter freestyle and a silver medal in the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle relay earlier in the Rio Olympics.
Blume finished just ahead of Simone Manuel of the United States, who earned a silver medal in the process. It marked the U.S.’ second straight gold in the event.?
Blume’s time was 0.02 off Kromowidjojo’s Olympic record, set in London four years ago, and the second fastest in the event this year. She posted a 24.44 in the semifinals to qualify sixth, but she’s proven to be a strong finisher.
Both Cate and Bronte Campbell of Australia failed to win a medal in the 100m distance on Thursday and neither landed on the podium in the splash and dash.
Bronze went to Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus, who was swimming from the outside lane.
The gold was Denmark’s third in swimming, and Blume’s first of any colour at an Olympics.
They were shut out of an individual medal again, with Cate finishing fifth and Bronte seventh.
Paltrinieri pulled away from the field and was under world-record pace much of the race before fading a bit at the end.
Jaeger claimed silver in 14:39.48, while bronze went to another Italian, Gabriele Detti, in 14:40.86.
