Singapore Airlines jet catches fire, but all passengers safe
On Monday, a Singapore Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing after encountering an engine problem that caused the wing of the aircraft to burst into flames.
A Singapore Airlines plane carrying 241 people was engulfed by flames seconds after it made an emergency landing.
The Straits Times reported that the passengers were put on a new flight to Milan that departed at 9:30am, and the aircraft was towed off the runway at about 10:30am. The plane’s right engine caught fire, setting the entire right wing ablaze.
Facebook user Jenny Chia said: “Thanks to the Pilots decision to turn back to Singapore airport after detecting something is not right…everyone are safe…good job!” “Huge fire was burning!”
“From her seat, Yee could see the fire from inside the plane, and the aftermath as firefighters doused it with foam”.
Passengers disembarked down the stairs and were taken in a bus to the terminal building. The passengers would be departing for Milan by another aircraft later in the day and the Singapore airline has promised to provide full cooperation to the authorities in the investigative procedures.
“It was a heart wrenching 5 minutes!” Everyone onboard was then safely evacuated.
Flight SQ368 was on its way to Milan from Singapore when it turned back to Changi Airport.
“I just escaped death!” wrote passenger Lee Bee Yee on Facebook, whose camera was rolling as one of the plane’s wings burned furiously out the window.
Though horrified, all the passengers were calm inside the plane till the plane landed at Changi airport.
Although passengers were given the option by SIA to defer their flight or to take an alternative flight, Ms Lee chose the former choice, to “go home and hug her kids”.
