Singer Bruce Dickinson says he got tongue cancer
Dickinson mentioned Oscar-winning “Wall Street” actor Michael Douglas, who alluded to oral sex as a cause for his own case of throat cancer years ago but directly connected it to his tongue activities.
As it turns out, Dickinson discovered that the tumors-one in his tongue and one by his lymph node-were a result of a human papillomavirus infection, which he believes was brought on by unprotected cunnilingus.
Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson was given the all-clear in May after-battling tongue cancer and now he’s revealed the possible cause of his illness.
Bruce is now clear of cancer, but the 56-year-old heavy metal star believes that more should be done to explore the links between HPV [human papillomavirus] and oral cancers.
Prolific rockers Iron Maiden have just released their new album. “It seems to be something that affects men”. And guys should know, if you get a lump here, and you’re over forty, don’t just assume antibiotics will get rid of it. Go and properly get it checked out.
The CDC has admitted that HPV can cause cells to grow abnormally, and has linked it to cervical cancers in women and oral cancers. “For some reason, and nobody knows why, in guys over 40 it can persist”. Dickinson says that the virus can leave behind a genetic marker that can lead to a cancer developing.
Always one to follow-up with a moral, Dickinson said of his experience with cancer: “I’ve learnt to have less time for people who waste my time”. They also had me on morphine for the last couple of weeks for pain.
HPV is, of course, the most common form of sexually transmitted virus in America; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 79 million people in the United States are now infected with HPV, and another 14 million contract the virus each year.
Michael Douglas is not alone. Bruce claims that “we need to get over that, because this is serious and hundreds of thousands of people are at risk”.
