Scott Weilang, 48, former vocalist of the band Stone Temple pilots was found dead inside his tour bus while on tour with his band Weilang and the Whereabouts.
“At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected”, the brief statement said.
Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts were scheduled to perform on Thursday at the Medina Inn, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Bloomington, but the show was canceled, the venue said on its website.
Tributes have started hitting social media, with former Nirvana star Krist Novoselic tweeting: “Really sorry to hear about Scott Weiland”, and Ryan Adams wrote: “RIP Scott Weiland Universe, please take care of him”.
A number of musicians who knew Weiland responded on Twitter upon learning of his death.
The news was first released via a tweet from Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, who said, “Our friend Scott Weiland has died”. “I think that this is a rock band that put out a rock album that STP fans will still really be into”.
When the band went on hiatus between 2002 and 2008, he formed the supergroup Velvet Revolver with former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan, as well as Dave Kushner of Wasted Youth, in 2003.
Other hits include “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline”.
There was a lot of infighting over the years in the band, while Weiland himself has a history of substance abuse. He was 48 years old.
Weiland had two children with his ex-wife Mary Forsberg.
The Wildabouts released an album, “Blaster“, in March, according to Pitchfork.
